The swift expansion of city populations, interconnected gadgets, digital frameworks, and data-producing services has necessitated intelligent and sustainable strategies for urban governance. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a pivotal technology in converting traditional cities into smart cities through the analysis of extensive data produced by Internet of Things (IoT) devices, surveillance systems, transportation networks, environmental sensors, utility infrastructure, and public services. This chapter examines the function of AI in intelligent urban environments, encompassing advanced transportation systems, traffic regulation, healthcare innovation, energy oversight, waste disposal, water resource administration, public security, ecological surveillance, intelligent infrastructure, governance, and crisis management. It analyses machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, reinforcement learning, edge AI, cloud computing, digital twins, and generative AI as crucial technologies for the advancement of smart cities. The section further examines issues related to privacy, cybersecurity, data integrity, algorithmic prejudice, interoperability, computational demands, transparency, digital disparity, and governance. Ultimately, new avenues of study are introduced for the advancement of secure, sustainable, autonomous, human-centered, and resilient AI-driven smart cities.
